The Politics of Jerusalem in Europe
My research contribution to the SPECTRUM project includes the documentation of Jerusalem monuments in the British Isles and the Low Countries. An additional research focus is on the political significances of recreating Jerusalem sites in Europe. My principal case study will be the Westminster palace and abbey complex during the Middle Ages, the central seat of Plantagenet power in England. Exploration of its Jerusalem Chamber, relics and devotional furnishings will provide a new perspective on both a seminal architectural work and the translation of Jerusalem sites in Europe. I will be considering the institutional and patronal affiliations of European Jerusalem recreations, their political uses and their ideological meanings and functions.
