The Way of the Cross in Jerusalem
In order to examine the visual translations of Jerusalem in Europe, I am studying the Way of the Cross, located in Jerusalem itself. The aim of my project is to understand the different formations of the Way of the Cross throughout the history of Jerusalem up to the present, bearing in mind changes in the routes and in the landmarks constructing the way. Getting familiar with prior research, which offers an overview of this formation process, has put in focus the main issues which I am dealing with: contradictory descriptions, unattended time gaps and unaddressed resources. A thorough evaluation of a wide range of sources contributes to our understanding of the different possible formations of the Way of the Cross in Jerusalem while constantly challenging our ability to achieve a coherent portrayal. The examination of the Jerusalemite Way of the Cross will make it possible to evaluate the relations between the experience undergone in any European translation of Jerusalem in different times and the parallel experience in Jerusalem itself.
